Ivar Antonsen, pianist/composer, is born in Fauske, North-Norway. He graduated in composition from Norges Musikkhøgskole in Oslo.
Ivar moved to Oslo in 1967 and made his jazz piano debut there with Danish trumpeter Palle Mikkelborg and Norwegian saxophonist Jan Garbarek, bassist Arild Andersen, and drummer Espen Rud. The following years he freelanced in different jazz groups, eventually forming his own trio.
Ivar moved to San Diego, California in 1985, where he performed in concerts and also taught within the Department of Music at California State University. He moved back to Oslo in 2004 and was hired as an Associate Professor at Norges Musikkhøgskole.
Among American and European jazz greats, he has recorded and/or performed with Ben Webster, Jimmy Heath, Art Farmer, Karin Krog, Thorgeir Stubø, Alex Riel, Jon Christensen and John Surman.
Among Ivar’s recordings as a leader, Double Circle, quartet recording with Knut Riisnæs, Bjørn Alterhaug, Espen Rud, and Dream Come True, piano duets with Andy LaVerne (New York), received great reviews both nationally and internationally. His recording, Dialogues, piano duets with Vigleik Storaas, earned a 2010 nomination for Spellemannprisen (Norwegian Grammy).
